James D. “Tarry” Benton


James Delen “Tarry” Benton, 77, of Leland went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, May 26, 2012 surrounded by his family at his home in Leland.

He was born in Brunswick County, NC on September 11, 1934 the son of the late James Norwood Benton and Alma White Benton. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Max Benton, Tyrone Benton and Rudy Benton, and brother in laws, Willie Garvey and Wilbur Gainey.

“Tarry” was a member of Elah Baptist Church and was retired as superintendent of Brunswick County Public Utilities Kings Bluff pump station with Lower Cape Fear Water and Sewer Authority. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, baseball and enjoyed coaching Dixie Youth little league baseball and women’s softball, which he did for over 12 years. He enjoyed numerous other activities involving his family and especially his grandchildren whom he loved very much. He was a very loving husband, father, granddaddy, brother and uncle. he was a man of many talents and always used those talents to help others.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Vina King Benton; two daughters, Beverly Lynn Benton Clemmons and Monta Faye Benton Jacobs and husband Bennie Jacobs; four grandchildren, Jeremy Delen Jacobs and wife Dwanedia, Ashli Dawn Jacobs, Tiauna Latriece Clemmons, and Gregory Samuel Clemmons, II; Three brothers, Lewis “Hunky” Benton (Harriett), Arland “PeeWee” Benton (Judy), Fred Benton(Beverly); three sisters, Gayle Garvey, Janice Gaskill (Terry), and Kim Williams (Ervin); sister and brother in-laws, Rose and John Cook, Earlyne and Carter Rabon, and Elizabeth Gainey; his uncle Bob White (Marie) and aunt Winifred Armstrong. Many other family members and friends including Jack Hogan and Robert Falor.

The family will see friends 6 to 8 pm Wednesday , May 30, 2012 at Elah Baptist Church, 1527 Old Fayetteville Road, Leland. Funeral services will be held 2 pm Thursday, May 31, 2012 at Elah Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Erby King. Burial will follow at King Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Jacobs, Gregory Clemmons, Sean Watson, Scott Long, Dustin Willetts, Bret Harrelson and Joey Hufham. Honorary pallbearers will be John Cook, Carter Rabon, Ervin Williams, Terry Gaskill, Greg Clemmons, Bennie Jacobs, Jack Hogan, Robert Falor, and Dale Rabon.

The family would like to thank all of the health care givers that were so loving and kind to “Tarry” during his illness, especially Dr. Amin, nurses Allison and Katie with Blumenthal Cancer Center, Dr. Lynn with Wilmington Health Associates, and Dr. Arb with Hanover Medical Specialist.

It has been many years since I have had any contact but I do remember Tarry growing up and my early years at home.     Ms Vina Mae and family, my prayers go out to each of you as you struggle through this difficult time. Mr Tarry always had a kindness about him that touch many lives. He will be missed by his friends and his church family yet I know that his family will miss Mr Tarry all the time yet each of you know that he is in God's loving arms and one day there will be know more parting.
