James “Jim” F. Cunius, Sr, 68, of Wilmington passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Sarah McDonnell Cunius. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Mary S. Cunius, of the home, son James F. Cunius, Jr and wife Cynthia, Wesley Chapel, Florida, daughter Patricia Owen and husband William, Wilmington, NC, daughter Denise McNeil, of the home, son Daniel Cunius and wife Judy, Marshville, NC., two sisters Patricia Lample and husband Harry, Mary Ann Cunius, all of Gurnee, IL., 12 beloved grandchildren, 1 great grandson and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Jim was very involved with The Knights of Columbus Council 1074 where he served as Grand Knight and District Deputy. He was also very active with the Ogden-New Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad where he served several terms as Chief. Jim was retired from New Hanover County EMS as a Paramedic. Jim was an avid Philadelphia Sports fan and loved dogs.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 2, 2007 at St. Mary Catholic Church where a visitation for family and friends will begin at 8:30 AM.

Because Jim will not be interred, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice or the charity of your choice.

Special thanks to Dr. Michele Moran Clancy and staff, Dr. Paul Kamitsuka and staff and the many caregivers who assisted Jim during his extended illness.

    I was very saddened to hear of Jim's passing. He was an asset to EMS and volunteers in his community. He offered a lot to us and was always available to help out or show us how things worked. My heart goes out to Mary and his friends.

    I don't see one ambulance or hear one siren without thinking of the many faces that made me who I am today. Jim's face is one of the first I see. There is a special place in God's mansion for him. Jim was always kind and caring. I will remember this first and foremost about him. I have been blessed to know him and even more honored to have worked with him. God bless you Mary and my condolences are with you and your family.

    The service today was beautiful. Jim meant a lot to many people and that was apparent as we all gathered today to say "goodbye for now". I know that Jim was smiling that big, kind smile of his as he rode off one last time in the ambulance he loved so much. I am honored to have known him and to have been his friend and co-worker. Love to you Mary and we are all here for you and will check on you and chat with you often.

    There are those who enter our lives and leave permanent footprints on our soul. I learned so much, not just about patient care, but caring about the patient from Jim.     I was so saddened to hear that Jim had passed. He was a great man. He was one of the most caring, and considerate EMS guys I have ever worked with. Jim was truly dedicated to helping others, and he did it all the time. It was always a great privilege for me to see Jim and Mary, usually in the street, or where ever we crossed paths.
