James Jay Munroe

April 24, 1952 - January 13, 2014
James Jay Munroe

James suffered a very painful three month battle with pancreatic cancer leaving us for a better life on Monday, January 13, 2014 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. He is preceded in death by his parents John Patrick Munroe, Jr. and Eula Jaye Cook Munroe. His wife, Tina Benton Munroe preceded him in death just 4 months ago.

Surviving are his grandson, Alex Thomas of the home; step-sons Nathan and Seth Thomas, and Tommy and Charles Justice; brother-in-law, James Hammond; and siblings John Munroe, III (Georgia) and Jeria Coleman (Steve).

James served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and returned home to begin a life of service in the Brunswick and Columbus County communities. He served as a member of the Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire Rescue Department and was a licensed Emergency Medical Technician and a certified chemical operator taking early retirement from DuPont.

He took great pleasure in being called “Popa James” and providing guidance to those he encountered seeking advice or a few words of wisdom. He took great pride in planning and successfully preparing a fishing pond that was a place for solace and wished that more time with family and friends had been spent together at the pond.

He left a few notes on his phone to sum up his life as “We do the best we can with what we have” and “Life is Good.”

A memorial service will be held at Riegelwood Baptist Church, 103 Hwy 87, Riegelwood, NC this Saturday, January 18 at 3:00 pm with visitation and reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution made to Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire Rescue Department, 100 John Riegel Road, Riegelwood, NC 28456.

I knew James for a long time as a genuinely nice guy. He gave freely of himself to others who needed a friend and did the best he could to help in his community, work and any environment he found himself. He is missed but surely now in that place that is reserved for those like James who pave the way for the rest of us

    Larena says:
Dear Munroe Family I am deeply sorry for the loss of James Jay Munroe. Death is an enemy that we as humans can not defeat. Yet, our heavenly father has promised us that through his son Jesus Christ, he will eliminate death forever (1Corinthians 15:26). Just knowing that there is a hope for our love ones' future should give us the strength to endure(Acts24:15, Isaiah41:10)In this your time of sorrow may it ease your pain to know that others are thinking about you.
