James “Jim” Duane Bly, Jr. passed away on August 5, 2023, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 61. Jim was born on December 28, 1961, in Penn Yan, NY, to the late James Duane Bly, Sr. and Irene Elizabeth Quinlivan. Although Jim’s time with us was cut short, he leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will be cherished by all who knew him.

Throughout his life, Jim wore many hats, starting with his time in the Merchant Marines and then transitioning into various roles within the construction field. He also found fulfillment as a Surgical Technician, utilizing his skills to help others in need. Jim’s diverse work experience reflected his adventurous spirit and his eagerness to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim’s greatest joy came from his family. He shared 35 remarkable years of marriage with his loving wife, Jean Marie Bly. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. Jim was a dedicated father to his daughters, Mackenzie Wiley, Katie Bly, and Kendel Bly. His mother, Irene Elizabeth Quinlivan, also lives on to cherish his memory. His unconditional love and support knew no bounds, and he took great pride in watching them grow into the remarkable women they are today.

Jim’s big heart and humble nature were evident to all who crossed his path. He quietly performed countless acts of kindness for others, never seeking recognition or praise. His selflessness touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible impact on those fortunate enough to have known him.

In addition to his immediate family, Jim is survived by his beloved grandson, JJ Hedgepeth, who brought immense joy to his life. He is also remembered by his stepfather Bert Quinlivan, sister, Allison Holt, and her husband, Lloyd, as well as his brother, Joseph Bly, and his wife, April, son in law Taylor Wiley, Katie’s boyfriend Codee, and Kendel’s fiancé Landon Cruz.

To honor Jim’s memory and celebrate his well-lived life, a Celebration of Life will be held on August 19, 2023, at 1:30 pm at the Escoba Bay Clubhouse in Sneads Ferry, NC. Family and friends are invited to join in remembering Jim’s remarkable journey and sharing stories of his warmth, compassion, and unwavering love. The family will receive visitors between 1 pm and 4 pm, allowing everyone to come together to pay their respects and find solace in each other’s company.

In lieu of flowers, Jim’s family has asked that friends and family consider donating to Operation Smile in his honor; a cause that was close to his heart.

Jim Duane Bly, Jr. may have left this world too soon, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched. His legacy serves as a reminder to embrace each day with love, kindness, and humility. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

I met Jim soon after he and Jean became “serious” about each other over 36 years ago. Jim was always kind and supportive of Jean’s friendships and I most appreciated how much he loved my friend and took care of his family. I am beyond saddened that Jean and his girls and grandson lost him so soon. He loved Jesus and I am comforted to know that Jim is alive and well in Heaven waiting for us. RIP friend.
