Janice Pickard Gurganus passed away Thursday, November 19, 2009 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Janice was born in Wilmington on May 22, 1921, the youngest child of Dora Bornemann Pickard and Eugene Rufus Pickard. She was the proud wife of Dr. C.D. Gurganus, who preceded her in death.
Janice was the first Bursar of Wilmington College (UNCW), where she met her husband. She later taught math for over 25 years in the New Hanover County school system, being one of the teachers to open Roland Grise Middle School in 1960. After retiring from the schools, she was active in her church teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, and working with the women’s ministry. She volunteered with organizations of which she was a member, including the New Hanover County Museum and the Stamp Defiance Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Janice is survived by her children, Doragene Gurganus of the home, Dan Gurganus and wife Lisa of Chapel Hill, NC, two grandsons, Jason Gurganus and wife Kristin of Raleigh, NC, and William Gurganus of Wilmington NC, two sister-in-laws Doris Pickard of Wilmington, Elma and husband Othell of Jacksonville NC and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her constant companion, her Papillion Cele, and three special friends Kathryn Harrelson, Ray Brousseau, and Arlene Mack all of Wilmington.
Graveside Services will be held on Monday, November 23, 2009 at 2:00 pm in Oakdale Cemetery by the Rev. John Misenheimer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 609 Market St., Wilmington, NC 28401 in Janice?s memory.
