Jean Katherine O’Connor died at home in Lake Shore Commons, Wilmington, NC, on December 3, 2010. She was born on August 7, 1936 to the late Arthur D. and Margaret A. (Hawkins) O’Connor.

Jean is survived by her two brothers, Arthur W. O’Connor of Wilmington, NC and Gregory D. O’Connor of Wilmington, DE.

Jean graduated from Chester (PA) High School and the American University in Washington DC. She lived for many years in New York City, where she had a successful career in public relations. Jean was an avid world traveler with a special interest in Egyptology.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

    I was Jean's caregiver for the last 11 months, worked with her 18 hours a week. She was no ordinary senior citizen, although she was surrounded by them in the retirement home she lived in. Often she would complain that the average age there was 86, she was indeed too young and spunky for those around her. She loved to get out and go, whether it was to Walmart or just down the street to Walgreens, she loved to shop. Stein Mart was probably her favorite store. And she would not leave home without doing her hair and makeup each time. She loved her clothes and her hats, and was dressed up even if it was just a routine trip to the doctor. She loved ice cream and anything chocolate. Jean could always find a story to tell, about her many travels and times spent in New York, Las Vegas and Egypt. I was glad to share my faith in the Lord with Jean, for it was many a time I needed the Lord's help to find missing objects in her cluttered apartment she had misplaced. She was always amazed when something was found after I had prayed. I believe this strengthened her own faith. Jean left us way too soon due to an unfortunate accident. We had planned on going to get her hair done on Friday when I found her. I know she is free now from her worries and illnesses. Rest in peace, my friend.

    I hope this is not too late to be noted. Jean and I were sorority sisters at American. I am deeply saddened by her loss. She exhibited such strength energy, and drive all of which I greatly admired. I always knew that she would do well in the world and be able to follow her dreams. Susan Netterstrom Cameron.
