Jerry T. Spell

Former member of General Electric’s Manufacturing and Engineering Group, founding member and former Chief of Rocky Point Volunteer Fire Department, Jerry Thomas Spell, died September 12, 2008, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter after courageously battling cancer.

A native of Wallace NC, the son of Tootsie (R.W.) and Hilda Sholar, he was born on July 30, 1944.

Jerry is lovingly survived by his wife Becky Spell of Castle Hayne; Hilda Sholar, his mother who resides in Wallace; his daughter and son-in-law Melissa and Chris Deal; and his brother Punk Sholar and wife Pat, all of whom reside in Ivanhoe, NC.

Jerry graduated from Wallace-Rose Hill High School, joined the National Guard Reserve, and attended Wilmington College. He worked at the Dairio in Wallace where he met Becky. They were married in 1967 at Rocky Point Methodist Church. He worked at General Electric in Castle Hayne where he was a member of the Elfun Society and retired in 2003 after 35 years of dedicated service. Jerry was a member of Wrightsboro United Methodist Church.

Aside from being a husband, father, and friend who brought joy and talent and a giving spirit to the lives of many, Jerry was an avid sportsman who lived life to the fullest. He inspired and encouraged his wife, daughter and countless others to love and care for God’s creatures and the natural world. His desire to be on the water, in the woods, and in the company of animals was unquenchable and it will live on in those whose lives he influenced. Jerry spent a great deal of time fishing or hunting with friends and family for whom he frequently expressed his love and appreciation. In the last days of his life, the folks that shared his passion for God’s great outdoors and spent much time with him throughout the years became his life line and they will be forever remembered for their endless assistance.

The family is greatly indebted to Danny and Jason Rivenbark, David Chalmers, Doug Anderson, Steve Vosnock, Bill Jackson, Ronnie Kornegay, Jim McLeod, Mary Lou Layne and many more local sportsmen, friends, church, and family members who provided fellowship and support to Jerry and his family in health and in sickness.

The family expresses special thanks to Dr. Michele Clancy, and the Lower Cape Fear Hospice staff.

Memorial Service followed by reception will be conducted by Pastor Bill Haddock at Wrightsboro United Methodist Church, Sunday, September 14, 2008 at 5:00 PM.
