Memorial Gifts & Donations

Jimmy Carroll Wooten passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Novant Regional Medical Center with his family at his side.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sue Carol Jacobs Wooten.

Born in Salisbury, NC, on April 17, 1943, he graduated from Boyden High School and attended Salisbury Business College. After serving in the US Army and spending a year in Korea, he became a police officer in Greensboro, Wilmington, and Carolina Beach. During his years at the WPD, he was given several awards for excellence and recognition from the civic organizations for his dedication to youth. Later he became the director of Safety and Security at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital, a teacher’s assistant in Brunswick County, and a substitute teacher in New Hanover County Schools and Cape Fear Academy.

A friend to all, Jimmy was an uncommon man whose influence reaches near and far. He was a pillar for his wife, children, and grandchildren in many ways. Well known for his jovial nature, he raised the spirits of acquaintances and strangers. His spontaneous jokes were often accompanied by pieces of candy and a genuine smile.

Those who knew Jimmy could see a more serious side. Because of his warmhearted nature he sympathized with all those who were troubled, and he offered words and deeds of encouragement. His affinity for special needs children was noteworthy.

An avid Tarheel fan, a fervent patriot, beach music aficionado, and diehard collector, Jimmy was 100% all in.

Over time he became a legend in his own time. May he rest in peace.

Jimmy is survived by daughter Carol Allison Austin (James) and grandchildren Fletcher Grey and Jacob Alexander Austin. He was predeceased by daughter Melissa Carol Wooten and his parents, Carroll Fletcher and Lorraine Jones Wooten and his stepfather, Arthur Harkey.

Visitation will be from 1:00pm to 3:00pm and the service at 3:00pm on Friday, January 5, 2024, at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Carolina Beach.

In lieu of flowers, Jimmy’s family asks that you please consider a donation to St. Paul’s Methodist Church or to the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Jimmy was an amazing man! He was so witty, light hearted and uplifting to all around him. Watching him work with the students at New Hanover High School was inspirational! It was obvious that he loved them and that love was returned. Prayers for love, comfort, and peace to his family. He will truly be missed by many.
