Memorial Gifts & Donations

Jo Beth Velten Albert, 93, went home to Jesus on November 16, 2023. She was born on July 21, 1930 to William A. and Minnie Mae Velten in Brownsville, TX.

Jo was the youngest of four  children and the only girl. Jo earned her Bachelor’s degree from Texas Christian University. She taught elementary, middle and high school in Texas, Colorado, and Louisiana before she and her husband, Johnny, retired to Tennessee.

According to family folklore, Jo met Johnny at their mutual siblings’ wedding. They talked all evening, and the rest was history. They married in August 1954 and moved to Colorado so Johnny could continue his education. Once all three daughters were in elementary school, Jo returned to teaching. She continued to teach when the family moved to Louisiana to follow Johnny’s career. Jo retired in 1993 at which time she and Johnny moved to Tennessee until his passing in 2011.

Jo was a woman who had a great sense of adventure and fun. She loved to go and do; she embraced new experiences and travel. Her mantra was, “No fools, no fun!” She, and Johnny, her husband, reared three independent-minded daughters who share Jo’s spirit of adventure.

Jo is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Albert  and her husband, Wayne Patterson, in Virginia; Nancy Henning and her husband ,Paul, in Texas: and Gail Lindsey and her husband, CJ, in North Carolina; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jo was a member of the PEO Sisterhood for over 70 years. Her last chapter was AY, Jacksonville, North Carolina.

A celebration of life will be held  at First Christian Church in Jacksonville, NC on December 1, 2023 at 4p.m.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given in Jo’s name to Mercy Ship or St. Jude’s Hospital.

I am grateful to have shared time and space with a woman whose desire was to please God. She will be missed in the fellowship, but her memory will forever abide with us. Sleep on Jo and take your rest.

    Michele Miller Morton says:
Jo was one of the most spunky women I have ever met. My fondest memories are of drinking margaritas with her either at her favorite Mexican restaurant or around my pool in our backyard! I have a great picture of her in a sombrero which was a tribute to her sense of fun and adventure. Now Jo and Johnny are sharing new adventures together, and Jo is sharing that marvelous smile with all the angels in Heaven.
