John Calvin Reaves

Memorial Gifts & Donations

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Calvin Reaves of Wilmington, N.C., who departed from our lives on February 2, 2024 at the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center.

John had a very satisfying career for 35 years as an educator in New Hanover County. He loved to see the satisfaction in his students’ eyes when they found meaning in the History that he taught them. Even after his retirement, John continued to share his dedication to teaching at Coastal Christian High School and Cape Fear Academy.
John appreciated the many friendships he formed in his life. He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife and his friends on camping trips. Some of his favorite trips were to New England and the mountains. He pursued his interest in computers, electronics and watching movies.

John married his high school sweetheart Christie Brown Reaves in 1969. They were married 54 wonderful years and were soulmates. John was a dedicated husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Elwood Reaves and Grace Carlton Reaves, and his brothers Linwood, Robert and Ronnie.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Christie Brown Reaves, son, Mark (Molly), 2 grandsons, Patrick and Thomas, sister, Dixie Potter(Carl). He also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and their children and his sister-in-law Marti (Don). He is also survived by his best friend of 57 years, Donald Clayton and his family and many other special friends.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at First Christian Church, where he was a devoted member. The service will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday February 10, 2024. The service will be live-streamed for anyone unable to attend fccilm.org/live. The family will be available to receive friends at a reception immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either First Christian Church, 2035 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, N.C. 28403, or Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, N.C. 28401.
Please join us to celebrate the life of this extraordinary man.

    Kristy Platt says:
I grew up with Johnny coming into my mother's beauty salon in the afternoons after he finished teaching. Christie worked with my mom for decades in that salon, so they were family to us. He always took an interest in asking me about school. I miss those times very much. Chris, I am praying for you, and I am so sorry for your loss.
