John Henry Potter, fondly known as John, bid farewell to this world on Friday, August 11, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and a trail of witty remarks. He was born on October 6, 1938, in the charming town of Kinston, NC, where his quick wit and mischievous charm began to take shape.
John’s journey through life was anything but ordinary. He started his career in the Commercial Cleaning Business alongside his lifelong friend, Hillman Brewer. Together, they tackled dirt and grime with such gusto that even the dust bunnies trembled in fear. But John’s adventurous spirit led him down a different path, and he ventured into the business of selling antiques, where he discovered a hidden talent for spotting hidden treasures.
Not one to limit himself, John also dabbled in accounting work along the way. His ability to crunch numbers with a side of dry humor made him the go-to guy for all financial matters. Who knew numbers could be so entertaining?
When he wasn’t busy conquering the business world, John indulged in his passions. He had an eye for art glass that would make any connoisseur jealous, and his collection of Empire furniture was the envy of all who laid eyes upon it. John’s keen sense of style and appreciation for fine craftsmanship were truly remarkable.
John’s spiritual journey led him to St. Jude’s Metropolitan Community Church, where he found solace and a community that embraced him. His presence at St. Jude’s was a testament to his open-mindedness and his commitment to love and acceptance.
John peacefully passed away from natural causes in Wilmington, NC, the place he called home. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Henry Potter and Bessie Burkette Potter, as well as his brother Jim Potter and sister Blanche P. Taylor
John will forever be cherished in the hearts of his surviving family and friends, his sister Shelby P. Scott and husband Scotty; brother Edward Potter and wife Diana; and his partner of 41 years, Glenn Lankford, and a number of nieces and nephews and his cousin Gladys will hold onto the memories they shared together with love and warmth.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at 1:00 PM at St. Jude’s MCC, located at 19 N. 26th Street, Wilmington, NC 28405. Following the service, the family welcomes friends to join them in reminiscing about John’s remarkable journey through life. His cremains will be placed in the family plot in Kinston, NC
John Henry Potter was not a man who simply existed; he lived life with gusto, leaving behind a trail of laughter and witty remarks that will echo in our hearts forever. May he rest in peace, knowing that his spirit and humor will continue to brighten our days, even in his absence.
