John Huey Sanders Jr. of Wrightsville Beach died April 18, 2012, at home. John was born August 28, 1940, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

He was a graduate of Belmont High School and earned a degree in engineering from Gaston Technical Institute. A resident of Wrightsville Beach, NC, since 1983, he had many wonderful friends and was a surrogate father to many of his son Johnny’s college friends.

John was a very special father, husband, father-in-law, grandfather, and friend. He never met a stranger, and will be missed by his loving wife Georgia and well as his sons John Sanders of Naples, FL, and Rev. Jim Sanders of Crouse, NC; step-children Shannon Reed Gernandt and Brandon Reed of Omaha, NE; brother-and-sister-in-law Mickey and Sadie Mincey of Lumberton, NC; his Aunt Mildred Neagle of Belmont, NC; and close cousins Yates Neagle of Morehead City, NC, and Mary Neagle Huffstetler of Lake Wylie, SC.
John is also survived by daughters-in-laws Liz Sanders of Naples, FL, and Lianne Reed of Omaha, NE, and six grandchildren: Riley and Reid Sanders, Hannah and Jackson Gernandt, and Madison and Isabella Reed.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John Huey Sanders Sr. and Elsie Wright Sanders of Belmont, NC, and his first wife, Joyce Mincey Sanders, originally of Lumberton, NC.

There will be a memorial celebration of John’s life at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 23, 2012, at Wrightsville United Methodist Church, Wrightsville Beach, NC by Rev. Bob Bauman and Pastor Jim Sanders. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

There will be another memorial celebration and graveside service in John’s hometown of Belmont, NC, over the summer.

I worked with John and our family camped many times together. we remember our daughter and the boys finding this BIG SNAKE during one of our trips.
