John Marlowe Williams, Sr., age 61, died Friday, October 23, 2015 at 5:45 am  at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Life Care Center. That’s when he took his first breath in Heaven. He was born on September 4, 1954, in Columbia, North Carolina.

John was preceded in death, by his Father Cecil Williams. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Cindy; his mother, Dora Williams; 2 children: Daughter Tonya Williams, and Son, John M. Williams, Jr.

He also leaves behind 2 brothers, Dexter Williams(Linda), and Kyle Williams, a Sister, Connie Britt(Mark), and numerous nieces and nephews. Also his special puppies, Sophia and Scooby Doo.

John proudly served in the United States Coast Guard for 10 years, as a Damage Controlman. Among his many awards were his “Polar Bear” & “Square Knot Sailor” status. He also received many medals and commendations during this time. He last served on the Northwind, which,  at that time, was stationed in Wilmington, NC.

He was a Plumber by trade, receiving his Class II plumbing License on May 14, 1997. He worked for several companies in both North Carolina and Virginia, for 35 years, 3 of which were owning is own company, Just Plumbing, before becoming disabled in 2004, due to COPD & Emphysema. He was an avid Nascar fan, following all the drivers of the Stewart-Haas Racing camp.  He also enjoyed watching professional wrestling.

His passion though, was for veterans.  He worked tirelessly, at the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 11, as Transportation Coordinator, since 2008. He was also a “Trench Rat.”  He loved all his “brothers.”  His other enjoyment, came from going to the New Hope Pulmonary Rehab program.  He had been in that program since 2008, which his doctor credited with extending his life. He also formed some lasting friendships there also.

At his request, John will be cremated.  There will be a visitation on Friday, October 30, 2015, from 7-9 pm. The memorial service, will be at 2pm on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation at 1535 S. 41st Street, Wilmington. Richard & Christine Brown says:
Just wanted to let you guys know how much you really mean to me and my family. And say THANK YOU for everything you have done for me. When i first met you guys i was really struggling with the transition from military to civilian life. You showed me a new trade ( plumbing ). I will always remember the first time we met and the first job we did togeather. You hit me between the eyes and almost broke my nose with a piece of pvc pipe, i have the scar to prove it. I think it was an accident (LOL). I had my doubts at times like when i was hanging upside down inside someones well with you holding me by my feet fixing a broken pipe but i hung in there and glad i did because i learned alot from you. i have been plumbing since in some way or another. NOT only do i consider you a good friend you are one of the main people that helped me get where i am today. You watched both of my kids grow up and you guided them in the right direction with the VA after their military service. Especially with patrick. When we didn't know where to turn you helped out and now he is getting the treatment he needs. I hate that i didn't try hard enough to convince you to come up for a visit. I told you that we had a place you could stay and i would have done whatever it took for your needs. I think you would have enjoyed getting out of the city and enjoying the country life for a while. Any time, place or reason we are only a phone call away. We will be there for you guys. I had rather be telling you this face to face. I am writing this and sending it to you now just in case something happens and we can't get there when we are planning to go. ( work, or something unforseen ). Again Thanks for everything, hang in there and will see you soon. Hope this letter puts a smile on your face in the mist of your struggles, knowing you are and will always be a huge part of my life. And i have always and will always tell people i learned everything i know about plumbing from you and my dad. And once again i at least owe you a heart felt THANK YOU.
