Joseph A. Zischkau, age 86, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, February 5, 2022.
He had passed from complications of Dementia.
He was born in Turtle Creek, PA and lived in Monroeville, PA until 2007 when he and his second wife, Eileen, moved to Leland, NC where he lived until his death.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer D., and mother, Laura Belle Elliott Zischkau, first wife, Dorothy Scenic Zischkau, and son Joseph A. Zischkau Jr., brothers Robert Elliott Zischkau and Donald Elliott Zischkau.
Joseph received his GED from Turtle Creek High School in 1953. He served in Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Battalion 724th Triple A Gun Battalion as headquarters sharp shooter.
He played on the church dart team and was a darts champion. He also enjoyed bowling and had a 286 average.
Joseph was employed by Alex Hutchison & Son for 41 years where he worked as Party Chief Surveyor and Draftsman. He also worked at the Leland Walmart for a short time.
Joseph loved Jesus and served the Lord as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, prayer team warrior, usher, greeter, and many church committees. During his walk with Jesus, he attended Electric Heights UMC church in Turtle Creek, PA until 2007, Closer Walk Church in Leland NC until 2019, and was most recently a member of Crosswinds Church in Leland NC since April of 2019.
Joseph was a gifted woodworker, making beautiful furniture, baptismal crosses for the churches, and gifts for his family and friends. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, going to the beach, reading about unusual facts and statistics, playing cards, listening to Andrea Boccelli, worship music, and the Ink Spots. He relished working with his railroad collection and later donated it to the Wilmington Railroad Museum where he volunteered. He walked several miles everyday, enjoying a rest at the local pond bench.
He is survived by his loving, second wife Eileen to whom he was married for 19 years, his stepdaughter, Tanya (Dominic) Angelozzi of Leland, NC, two estranged daughters, Leah Jo Pennebaker of Carlisle, PA and Jodi Bea (Damien) Teslevich of N. Hunington, PA, grandsons, Zachary Pennebaker, Noah Pennebaker, and Seth Pennebaker, granddaughter Mia Teslevich, two nephews, Robert Zischkau of Turtle Creek, PA and Randy Zischkau of Irwin, PA.
Arrangements are being handled by Wilmington Funeral and Cremation in Wilmington, NC.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, February 19, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Crosswinds Church, Leland, NC.
Eileen, Tanya, and Dominic would like to thank all the people at Elderhaus PACE whom made it possible for us to have Joseph at home for most of his pallative care and for their love and compassion. Additionally, we thank the caring “Blue Team”, Joseph’s caregiver, Willie, who took such good care of him, the medical staff, driver’s, physical therapists, social workers, nurses, and doctors. Also, the caregivers from Coastal Companion: Naomi, Helen, Tequila, and Makayla. Each of these ladies took very good care of him.
A special thank you to our church, Crosswinds Church, for their compassion, prayers, and help. We also thank Close Walk Church for their prayers and help.
Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center was a tremendous blessing, showing love and compassion to Joseph, Eileen, Tanya, and Dominic during his hospice journey.
