Joseph Birdell Clewis, 79, of Leland, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2013 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter after a long illness.
Born in Columbus County, NC, he was a son of the late Isham King Clewis and Evelyn Nance Mills. He was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation and worked for many years as a security officer. Mr. Clewis was a very active member of Community Chapel Baptist Church in Leland and always brought smiles to the faces of the children there by always providing them candy.
Surviving, are his faithful companion and sweetheart of 19 years, Joyce Midgett of the home; two sons, Jody Clewis (Denise) Lafayette, LA, Alvin Clewis of Winnabow; three daughters, Vickie Clewis Sparrow (Lindsey Smith) of Chesapeake, VA, Connie Barnhill (David), Vivian Powell (Gordon) all of Leland; twelve grandchildren, John, Bobby, Sandra, Kimberly, Sarah, Rachele, Danielle, Gabrielle, Wendy, Jerry, Michele, Brandi; and twenty great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit the family at the home of Connie and David Barnhill; 2509 Malmo Loop Road NE; Leland, NC 28451.
A memorial service will be 6 pm Wednesday at Community Chapel Baptist Church; 2419 Malmo Loop Road, NE; Leland, NC 28451 with Reverends Robert E. Lee and Horace Halls officiating.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the nurses and staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their loving care for Joe, and requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation; 1414 Physicians Drive; Wilmington, NC 28401.
