Memorial Gifts & Donations

In Loving Memory of Joseph John Kociscin, PhD (April 6, 1932 – March 14, 2023)

It is with deep sorrow, we bid farewell to Joseph John Kociscin, PhD, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed engineer, who passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at the age of 90, just a few weeks shy of his 91st birthday. His life was a testament to his faith, resilience, dedication, and commitment to both his family and his profession.

Joe was born in Landsford, PA on April 6th, 1932, the son of the late John Kociscin and Mary Lapos.

He served his country faithfully in the United States Army Radio Corps during the Korean War where he attained the rank of Corporal.

On the GI Bill, he went to college, and earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University where he was a member of the prestigious Tau Beta Pi Engineering honor fraternity.

He spent the majority of his Exxon Mobil career working in Hydroprocessing Technology and extensively travelling the US and the World — with a claim of over 256 trips!

In his spare time and retirement, he loved to plant flowers, especially Impatiens (that’s their name). He enjoyed good food and wine, and was there for his immediate and extended family.

A devout Catholic and member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Wilmington, he found solace and guidance throughout his life in his faith which remained a constant source of strength for him and his family. He was also an active, respected member of the Carolina Bay at Autumn Hall Retirement Community.

He is preceded in death by his five sisters Anna (Philapovich), Margaret (Sokol), Mary (Kenney), Florence (Kalbac), Helen (Lynch) and brother Edward. Their love and memories continue to be cherished by the family.

Joe’s legacy lives on through his beloved wife of almost 57 years, Martha “Schatzie” Kociscin, daughter Nicole Romig and her husband Joel, son Mark Kociscin and his wife Corrie (Greninger) Kociscin. And sister-in-law, Peggy (Newcomer) Kociscin.

He was a doting grandfather to his granddaughters, Emma Lynn Romig and Melodie Jane Kociscin, who brought immense joy and happiness to his life.

Joe’s life was a beautiful tapestry of love, wisdom, and service. His indelible impact on his family, friends, and colleagues will remain in our hearts forever.

As we celebrate Joseph’s life and honor his memory, let us remember the lessons he taught us and the love he shared with each one of us.

Funeral Mass services will be held on 10:30am Monday March 20th at St Mark Catholic Church & School 1011 Eastwood Road, Wilmington, NC 28403.

Thank you!

Finally, as he loved them so much, for the gardeners / “green thumbs” out there, we ask that you plant a(n) Impatiens flower in his memory this spring.

We will forever hold his radiant spirit close to our hearts. Rest in peace, dear Joe.
