Josephine King Wright Cooper, 85, of Wilmington, passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2013.
She was born in Wilmington to the late Benjamin and Carrie Wright. Mrs. Cooper graduated from Williston Senior High and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Elizabeth City Teacher’s College. She married her college sweetheart, Edward Cooper, Sr. She was involved in many civic and social organizations including the NAACP, where she proudly participated in many civil rights marches and picket lines; and The Cliques, a local women’s social group. She retired from the Port Chester School system. In her own words she said, “I’ve lived a most rewarding life with so many friends, and experiences. I’ve been a world traveler especially enjoying the many cruises I’ve shared with my friends and family.”
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Edward Cooper, Jr.
Survivors include her loving husband, Edward Cooper, Sr.; son, Garry Cooper, of Wilmington; two sisters, Mary Wright Gaines of Detroit, MI, and Barbara Wright Wright of West Orange, NJ; grandsons, Christopher Cooper of CA, and Patrick Cooper of FL; and great grandchildren, Nathaniel Cooper and Sabra Cooper, both of CA.
A memorial service will be celebrated at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at Chestnut Street Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Perry Griffin officiating.
