Josephine “Jo” Pugliese passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 5, 2023, at the age of 87. She was born on December 14, 1935, in Bridgeport, CT, and went on to leave an indelible mark on the lives of many through her career and passions.

Josephine began her teaching journey in Bridgeport, CT, where she taught second grade for several years. Later, she moved to Norwalk and continued her teaching career, imparting knowledge to elementary and middle school students until her well-deserved retirement. Her dedication and love for her students earned her the respect and admiration of many.

Not only was Jo a devoted educator, but she also had an unwavering passion for golf. Alongside her husband, Mathew, she spent countless afternoons and weekends honing her skills at Shorehaven Country Club in Norwalk. Their shared love for the sport created cherished memories and showcased their talents as formidable golfers.

Jo’s thirst for knowledge led her to earn her Undergraduate degree at Southern Connecticut State Teachers College, followed by a Master’s degree in Education at Fairfield University. Her commitment to learning and personal growth reflected her desire to provide the best education possible to her students.

Beyond her professional achievements, Jo was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She shared 55 wonderful years of marriage with her devoted husband, Mathew A. Pugliese. Together, they raised their two children, Jeffrey and Gregory, and embraced the joys of parenthood. Jo adored her grandchildren, Emma, Isabella, Ava, and Jake, and treasured the time spent with them.

In addition to her immediate family, Jo is survived by her daughter in law Whitney Pugliese, brothers-in-law, Joseph Pugliese and George Jackson, sisters-in-law JoAnne Jackson and Susan Pugliese, nieces Donna Codeghini and Amanda Pugliese, nephew Jimmy Codeghini, as well as several cousins residing in Connecticut. Her warm presence and genuine love will be deeply missed by her extended family and friends.

Services to commemorate Jo’s life will be held on August 11, 2023. Visitation will take place from 1:00pm to 2:00pm, followed by a Catholic Funeral Mass at 2:00pm, held at the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary in Wilmington, NC.

Josephine’s zest for life extended beyond her profession and hobbies. She had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. With her spry sense of humor, she brought joy to those around her. Her profound love for her children and family was evident in all that she did, and she leaves behind beautiful memories cherished by former students, friends, and family members.

In remembrance of Josephine, and in lieu of flowers, her family asks that you consider donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in her memory; a cause that meant a great deal to her.
