June B. Mittman

June 12, 1924 - September 26, 2014
June B. Mittman

June Barrett Mittman, age 90, of Wilmington passed away Friday, September 26, 2014 at her residence surrounded by her family. June was born in Haddonfield, NJ in 1924, and lived there until she left for Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN, having received a full scholarship.

She completed her degree in 1945 and returned to NJ, where she met her future husband, Edward Mittman. They were married in 1948 and remained so until his death in 2010.

She is survived by their 3 children; Janet, Barbara and Edward Mittman as well as two grandchildren, Kelsey and Austin Quigley.
June was a woman ahead of her time, balancing duties as a housewife with substitute teaching and later a position as youth director for the American Red Cross. In later life, she volunteered at various organizations including churches, thrift stores and at the Cape May, NJ Welcome Center. She maintained an active healthy lifestyle long before it was fashionable to do so. For many years she walked 3 miles a day, and continued exercising until shortly before her death. June will be remembered for her outgoing personality, humor, and perhaps more than anything, her wonderful piano playing. She began playing professionally at age 10 and continued doing so at social events her entire life. June played various kinds of music but she loved the music of the 1940’s best. She generally played by ear, easily playing anything she heard and transposing chords. June also played theater organ.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, NC . A reception will follow the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be given to Pancreatic Cancer Research at Mayo Clinic Rochester and sent to: Mayo Clinic, Department of Development, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905.” Donations, made out to “Mayo Clinic” should have a note saying the gift is in memory of June B. Mittman.
