Laura Warthen Avery

Laura Moffatt Warthen Avery, affectionately known as “Bobbie”, passed peacefully on Friday, May 1, 2020 at the age of 100. Originally from Kensington, Maryland and later Bethesda, Maryland, Bobbie spent the last 7 years of her life in Wilmington, NC where she was lovingly cared for by her devoted daughter and grandson.

Bobbie is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Hays; daughter-in-law Carol Avery; grandchildren Richard Hays (Katie); Staci Kimball (Ross); Cindy Ford; Stephanie Samdahl (Walker), and Kim Shupert; great-grandchildren Brett Kimball, Chase Kimball, Landry Kimball, Jonah Ford, Alyssa Ford, Eliana Ford, Serina Ford; Mandy Moyer (Danny), Jenny Lathem (Drew), Dalton Samdahl, Ryan Samdahl, Kristen Sikorsky (Marc), and Brittany Bateman (Brett); as well as 7 great, great-grandchildren. She leaves behind an adoring brother, Captain Donald Warthen (Janelle), and many nieces and nephews.

Bobbie’s presence here on earth was infectious… it was impossible to be around her and not smile. She was a happy, loving, pleasant soul with a laugh that could light up a room. She always looked at the bright side of things, finding contentment in everyday life even in her final days. Bobbie was grateful for the wonderful, long life she had lived and all the privileges she had enjoyed… and she took great pride in having celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded in love by family and friends.

Our beloved Bobbie, Mom, Nana, Aunt Bobbie meant so much to so many. We will miss her dearly, but we take comfort in knowing she is happily reunited in Heaven with her husband John Buell Avery, sons John Avery, Jr. and Walter Avery; siblings Gerald Warthen, Mary Bradley Lambert, and Rebecca Holder; parents Mary and Gerald Warthen; and many cherished childhood friends who went before her.

Due to the COVID 19 outbreak and the restrictions set by local and state governments limiting gatherings, a graveside service and celebration of life will be held late summer in Rockville, Maryland.

Aunt Bobbi has been an important part of my life for so many years. Since childhood when I visited then later when I lived in Maryland she was there through many different seasons of life. I miss her deeply as I know so many others do. She gave great love and joy to many and her laugh was infectious. Prayers and sympathy to all who got to call her family or firend. She will be missed.

I am blessed and happy for her life of 100 years here but happier for her that now she is with her loving parents, wonderful husband, devoted children and adoring family. I will always smile and feel the love when I think of her!
