Lawrence Garrett Volk

Memorial Gifts & Donations

Lawrence (Larry, Coach, or Dr.) Volk, 67, of Carolina Beach, NC passed unexpectedly on 17 January in his sleep of natural causes. We are devastated by this loss of Larry’s presence in our lives. It was very unexpected.

Born on 16 October 1954 to loving parents R. Leonard Volk Jr. and Leona Volk, Dr. Volk is survived by his sister and brother, Vickie and Ralph, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Larry came to his lifelong happy, irrepressible personality at a young age, and continued throughout his life to bring joy to the lives of those that he met. Larry graduated from Lake Taylor High school in 1972 and went on to pursue a degree in Education at the University of Virginia. Larry is a “triple Hoo” acquiring a BS and Masters in Education as well as an Education Specialist (EDS) degree in Instructional Technology. He was a lifelong University sports fan starting with his tryout as a walk-on for spring football at UVA through his attendance at multiple basketball, football, and soccer events over the years.

Larry’s commitment to education started with teaching and coaching in 1977 at Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, VA and continued to his retirement in 2015 at Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC. He always felt a personal commitment and responsibility to his students and measured his effectiveness by the numerous accomplishments of his students over the years. We can’t possibly recount the number of testimonials from students whose lives were affected by Dr. or Coach Volk. He stayed in touch through social media and followed up with many of his students as they became successful adults. His loss will be deeply felt by many.

In addition to his educational commitment, Larry always exemplified the continued pursuit of knowledge and adventure, and the enjoyment of life. Larry loved the adventure of travel, especially cruises to the Bahamas and the Caribbean. He experienced life with gusto whether it was ziplining, snorkeling, diving, dancing, cooking, or dining experiences (a chef at heart). Larry never met a stranger and made lifelong friends within minutes.

Lawrence Volk is predeceased by his parents and is survived by his siblings and their respective families. His numerous friends in the greater Wilmington, NC area and nearby beaches; the Richmond, Charlottesville, and Hampton Roads areas in Virginia; and locations in Florida and the Caribbean are mourning his loss. He is leaving a void for many as he had consistently shared his love of life and living in the moment.

Services have not yet been planned and will be communicated once the pandemic subsides. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to SECU Family House at New Hanover Regional Medical Center where Larry volunteered as Thanksgiving Chef, or The School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia.

Sadly I was only able to “know” this precious soul through the memories and incredibly fun travels of Nancy Kraselsky and Dr Volk over the last few years. His Southern gentleman nature came right through the photos and cast a light around both he and Nancy !!! I am so sorry that he has left so soon but know that his spirit will be around those that he was closest to in life !!! Many prayers for everyone. Love you very much Nancy!!

I am so saddened by Dr. Volk’s passing. Not only was he a gifted educator, he was such a supportive person…even after I was no longer his student. May peace be with his family.
