Lela Mae “Susie” Smith, age 75, of Leland passed away Thursday, December 10, 2020 at home surrounded by her loving family.
Lela Mae “Susie” Long Smith, arrived on May 22, 1945, Sassy and Sweet. Her parents were the late James Wiley Long and Mary Elizabeth Blanton Long Savage. She was a beloved sister to her brothers: Jimmie Long (Myrtle) of Wilmington and Ronnie Long (Debbie) of Black, AL. She was a devoted wife to her one and only true love, David Beach Smith, Sr. for 58 years, and a forever mom to Darlene Hinton and husband Jack, Denise Osward and husband Karl, and David Smith, Jr.
She was the indulging grandma to Ronald Christ-pher Milligan and wife Angie of Jax, FL, Clarissa Tracy and Husband Paul of Rocky Point, NC, PF-7 Stephen Smith of the US Army El Paso, TX, Jessica Osward of Bossier, LA, Deana Carroll and husband Jason of Whiteville, NC, Kyndall Mintz and husband Jared of Leland, NC and Alyssa Osward of Leland, NC.
Her legacy continues with her great-grandchildren; Logan Plaisted, Katrina Milligan, Nick Plaisted, Trey Cheatham, Paulie Tracy, Scarlett Tracy and Wesson Mintz.
When you say “Susie” you can’t help but think of the words: Giver, Servant, Doer, and a Writer of the Word, as it was received from the Lord, to share with others.
Although she got Sassier in her golden years, she was dearly loved.
Susie grew up in Wilmington and graduated from New Hanover High School. She had many jobs including working at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, a Life Insurance Sales Representative, and a Hostess at the Pizza Hut. More importantly, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Pine Valley Church of God, and had served with the Wilmington Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary for many years.
Visitation for family and friends will be at Wilmington Funeral Chapel starting at 10 am Thursday, December 17, 2020. Her Funeral Services will be at 12 noon Thursday at Wilmington Funeral Chapel led by Pastor Donald Smith. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
