Memorial Gifts & Donations

Mr. Leon Eschal West, 91 of Wilmington, NC passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2023 at his home. He was born on August 9, 1932 in White Oak, NC; son of the late Clyde E. and Mabel Owens West.

He graduated from White Oak School in the class of 1950. Leon attended NC State University until his father’s illness required him to return home to take care of the farm. He married Joyce Edwards of Bladenboro on November 17, 1956, and they had 59 blessed years together until her passing in 2015. After honorably serving his country in the US Army at Fort Rucker, AL; Leon began a career as an insurance agent with Home Beneficial. He rose up through the ranks and finished his career as District Manager. Leon loved his family and loved serving the Lord. He was a member of Oleander United Methodist Church from 1972 until it merged this year with Wrightsville Beach UMC. He was a member of the choir and United Methodist Men. As his health declined, he enjoyed watching the church service on the internet. After the two hurricanes in 1996, Leon and others in the UMM began Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministries (W.A.R.M.). This organization provides help for the elderly and less fortunate whose homes need repairs so they can safely live in them. In 1999, Leon was honored as WA.R.M. Volunteer of the year. In 2007, he received the Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service. Always a humble man, he shied away from the attention and gave all the glory to God. His mind was still sharp as he would share stories and impart wisdom to us. However, his body was weak, and our hearts are broken, but we know he is in heaven fully restored and with Mama.

Survivors include 4 children: David and wife, Donna West and Danny and wife, Tiffany all of Wilmington, Daughters, Susan and Husband, Jeff Pope of Rocky Mount, NC and Cindi and Husband, Ed Warner of Garner, NC. Grandfather of Deanna Pope and Matthew West, his sibling, Sylvia Clark (Emmett) and many beloved in-laws and nieces and nephews. Leon is also, predeceased by sisters, Lucille (Hugh), Lola (Norman) Hilliard and Joan Watanabe and brother, Donald West (Glenna).

    Cheryl Johnson says:
Leon West will always be remembered as a kind, generous man who lived his faith. You knew he was a Christian by his many acts of kindnesses not expecting anything in return. His love of the Lord, family and friends will always stand out. As a Sunday School teacher, he was well versed in bringing out the teachings of Christ. And I know that He lived them as well. . My and his family grew close as friends could be for over the 40 years he and his family were there. ALwpn will be greatly missed yet we know that He is now living pain free and in the light of his Lord.
