Memorial Gifts & Donations

Ted (Leonard) Smith, 68, of Bolivia, NC died peacefully at home on February 29, 2008, with his wife and family by his side.

Ted was born April 20, 1939 in Portland, Maine, and was the youngest of four children born to the late Ernest Albert Smith and the late Clara Phelps Smith.

Born into humble beginnings, Ted joined the workforce early to help out the family. From 1960 to 1979 he was married to Shirley Smith. They settled in Westbrook, Maine where they raised their 4 children. Here he became active in local Democratic politics, and served on the city council for a number of years. He worked for a prominent supermarket, where he quickly became manager, a position he held until 1972 when he decided to go into business for himself. His very successful convenience store “Reddi-Teddi’s” quickly expanded and evolved into an even more successful International Caterers. Ted was not only well-known in Maine, but around the country, for his lobster bakes. In 1989, he
sold his business and retired to Naples, Maine. Not long afterwards, he realized that retirement wasn’t for him, so he started his second catering
business, Lake Region Caterers. In 1997 he retired again and relocated to Brunswick County, North Carolina, where he volunteered his time to various
organizations in the area. He was an avid golfer, and was well known in several communities for catering casual gatherings and community events. He married his
partner of nearly 5 years, Suzanne Furr, on December 16, 2007.

Ted is preceeded in death by his brother Ernest, Jr. and sister, Marion Davis.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne; son, Stefan (Leonard, Jr.) of Prague, Czech Republic; daughter Deborah Smith Marez and her sons Eluid and Emile, of
Bolivia; daughter Diane Hill and her husband Charlie of Pearce, Arizona, and children Kevin and Ariana; daughter Denise Smith of Portland, Maine, and her daughters Kira and Arielle; and sister Barbara Cook, of South Portland, Maine.

A memorial service will be held at Concord United Methodist Church, 147 Southport-Supply Road/Highway 211, Supply, NC on Thursday, March 6, at 3:00 pm.
Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Concord United Methodist Church or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
