Lester Edward Small

Lester Edward Small, age 73, passed away unexpectedly on September 19, 2022, in Leland, NC.  He was born on February 25, 1949 to the late Leroy and Doris Small of Wallingford, CT.

Lester joined the Marines in 1968 right after High School and served a tour in Vietnam.  After leaving the Marines in 1972 he joined the CT National Guard.  He served there until 1994 when he moved to Vermont and transferred to the VT National Guard.  During his time with the VT National Guard, he was ordered to active duty in 2004 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  Lester honorably retired from the VT National Guard in 2009.

Whenever the chance arouse Lester loved to fish.  Being small streams, lakes or the ocean.  He truly enjoyed weekend boat trips on the Long Island Sound with his Brother-in-laws and son.  He enjoyed teaching his grandson how to cast a line before taking him fishing for the first time.  Lester’s other passion was gardening.  He took great pride in knowing the names of all the plants and trees he had in his yards and how to best care of each of them.

Lester and his wife settled into their retirement home in Leland, NC in 2020 where he continued his passion for gardening and fishing the Cape Fear River.  On his daily golf cart rides Lester enjoyed creating great friendships in his community.

Lester is survived by his wife Carol of Leland, NC.  Children Keith and wife Angie of Brooksville, FL; Kimberly and husband Ryan of St.
Albans, VT.  Grandchildren Mason and Hunter.  Sister Bernice and husband Donnie of Central, SC.  Predeceased by his brother Allan of Okeechobee, FL.  He will also be greatly missed by his extended family and friends.

This is heartbreaking. Lester was a fantastic neighbor for so many years who has left me with memories of him giving tractor rides to his grandson Hunter through the neighborhood, always helping with road work, downed trees, and all that came with living in the woods. He often would show up in the fall with an offering of kindling wood he collected for our woodstove. He always had a friendly wave and a kind smile at the ready. Sending lots of love from the Mutton Hill Henrys.
