LOIS RUTH HAMMOND McINNIS, passed away peacefully at home on March 3rd, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. Born April 19th, 1930 daughter of Dr. Gordon and Dorthy Hammond in Fort Wayne, IN.
Lois was a fourth generation Allen County resident later moving to North Carolina to be near her family. She graduated from Southside High School. Then received her Bachelor’s of Science in Anthropology from The University of Arizona and her Master’s Degree in Education from St. Francis College in Fort Wayne, IN.
Lois was a teacher at Southwest Allen County Schools for 30 years, retiring in 1993. She served as a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school for many years. A member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and The Fort Wayne Woman’s Reading Club, serving as president for several terms.
Lois was an avid reader who enjoyed learning about people and their histories. She loved hearing a good story and even told a few of her own, like the time she was kissed by Jimmy Dean. Lois had a fascination with Astrology and would ask your birthday upon meeting you. She enjoyed big band music and had a fondness for the Rolling Stones. Stray animals (and a few humans) found their way to her doorstep and were welcomed as family. She was dedicated to her vices and loyal to her friends. Lois will be remembered as an independent, loving, and generous person and will be missed dearly.
She is survived by her son, Gordon (Vicky) McInnis, two grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one great great grandson.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the ASPCA, The National Wildlife Federation or the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne.
