Lorrie Elliot Orantes, age 71, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 2, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Lorrie was a unique and unconventional daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend in many ways. However, what made her different is also what made her so very special.
If you flip through any photo album, you’ll see many pictures of Lorrie smiling, wearing colorful hats, occasionally sporting a fun wig, or having a great time posing for the camera. Even though she often preferred to spend time alone, she had a terrific sense of humor, infectious laughter, and a big personality.
She loved to travel, go sightseeing, dining out, and she loved 1970s music, especially Barry Manilow. Lorrie was an avid reader and made ornate and beautiful handmade quilts for her friends and family. But, she mostly loved her two sons, Ty and Mike, her daughter-in-law, Jennifer, and her five grandchildren, Alex, Livia, Israel, Michael, and Matthew.
Lorrie could be eccentric, and as we mourn her loss, we are grateful for the many anecdotes, quotes, and stories only she could have left us with. No one will ever replace the very distinct and special place she has had in our lives and our hearts. She will be incredibly missed but never forgotten.
