Memorial Gifts & Donations

Luther “Luke” Earle Burns, 90, of Leland, was surrounded by the love of his family when he peacefully passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2023. He was born August 26, 1933 in Greenville, South Carolina to Harley Maze and Annie Thompson Burns, both who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bobbie Satterfield Burns.

Luke and Bobbie were blessed with a loving family of four children, son Greg (Denise) Burns, daughter Karen (Ronnie) Mintz, son David (Kim) Burns, and daughter Kathy Burns. Luke showed his great love for his grandchildren; Tiffany (Ron) Beach, Paige Carr, Justin Mintz, Chris (Jessica) Burns, Josh Burns, Sarah (Matt Kerns) Mintz, late grandson in-law Chris Heath and great-grandchildren; Hailey Garret, Wade Burns, Jake Burns, Hannah Burns; and step great-grandchildren Eric and Sofia Beach.

Luke served his country by joining the United States Air Force in 1951. He was loved and respected by many family, friends, and coworkers. He enjoyed sharing stories, making people laugh, and even providing strict directions to the task at hand, anytime he had a chance. In his spare time you could find Luke in his garage tinkering around, fishing with his grandchildren, or drinking coffee on the front porch, even during a thunderstorm.

Luke will be remembered for the love and protection he showed his family and friends. He taught the ones around him to be strong and always do the right thing no matter the costs. We will carry these life lessons with us always, as we remember his simplicity and distinctiveness.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, November 12, at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation – Leland Chapel, 535 Village Road, Leland, 28451, where a Viewing will be held from 1:00 PM until time of services.

    Kurt Krueger says:
I am so sad to have lost my friend and neighbor Luke. I am thankful to have had the time I had to spend with him sitting on his front porch chatting on the trials and tribulations of living where we did, listening to his stories from all over the world and laughing with him. I even fondly remember getting harshly schooled by him on how to grade the dirty road we shared correctly. He was a fearless, tough character with a tender heart. I will miss him greatly. Rest in Peace my friend and save me a good seat. Lord, I pray you give this man and his family love, comfort, and rest.
