Memorial Gifts & Donations

Dr. Marlene Brogan passed away in Wilmington, NC on Tuesday, October 9, 2018.

Marlene was born on August 6, 1965 in Knoxville, Tennessee, daughter of Beauchamp and Virginia Brogan.  Marlene was raised in Knoxville and spent her childhood pursuing numerous activities – dance, music, swimming, boating and hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains.  She was an avid swimmer and won many medals over a period of several years on various swim teams.  Marlene loved the outdoors, especially the mountains, and her favorite spots were the trails of Mount LeConte and The Chimneys, which she hiked multiple times.  She grew up in a “Tennessee Volunteer” family, and she was a huge fan of Tennessee football.  She went to every game she could, and she could recite Vol stats better than many sportscasters.

Marlene was driven very early in life to be a physician – something she decided in junior high school.  She graduated a year early from Doyle High School, knowing she had many years of education in front of her.  She attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where she received her undergraduate degree, and she then attended Quillen College of Medicine atEast Tennessee State University, where she received her doctorate degree in psychiatric medicine.  Although Marlene entered medical school with the intent of becoming a heart surgeon, she felt like the greatest advancements in medicine would be in the psychiatric field, and she changed her focus early on.

Dr. Brogan completed her residency in Columbia, SC and then moved to Gastonia, NC to open a private practice.  After several years in private practice, she moved to Charlotte and transitioned into a career working at hospitals, clinics, and what ended up being the great passion of her career – telemedicine.  Dr. Brogan was instrumental in pioneering psychiatric telemedicine, in both her resident state of North Carolina and also in Michigan.  One of Dr. Brogan’s former employers remembers her as being the Dr. that would never say no – that she would travel anywhere, anytime she was needed for a consultation or an intervention.  Dr. Brogan truly had a servant’s heart.

Dr. Brogan also had a soft spot for the elderly.  She spent much of her free time visiting and befriending complete strangers in nursing homes, as well as being an avid supporter of mobile meal services.

Marlene is preceded in death by her father, Beauchamp Brogan.  She is survived by her mother, Virginia Brogan, brother John Brogan (wife Romona), brother Alan Brogan, brother Jim Brogan (wife Dee Dee), and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

While the family is having a private gathering to celebrate Marlene’s life, online condolences may be posted at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation (wilmingtoncares.com).

For anyone wishing to make a charitable donation in Dr. Brogan’s memory, she would likely wish those to be to a mobile meal service for the elderly or to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

Dear family and friends, I am so sorry for your loss. I have lost loved ones in death and what brings me comfort is the hope found in the Bible at Revelation 21:4. There it talks about how soon death will be no more and sickness and pain will be a thing of the past. For more information on hope for our loved ones please visit www.jw.org
