Martha Grace Driscoll Shirer of Wilmington, wife of the late Raymond Miller Shirer, passed away Monday, June 4, 2007 at the home of her daughter Mrs. Gainey. Mrs. Shirer, daughter of Susan Cornelia Payne Driscoll and James Joseph Driscoll, and one of 11 children, was born November 14, 1916 in Connellsville, PA. Mrs. Shirer was a newspaper reporter, assistant society editor, Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader. She was active in her church and sang in the choir. Mrs. Shirer wrote a Bridge column in the Wilmington Star and attained the expert level of Life Master in ACBL Bridge. She directed area bridge clubs in Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of Reconciliation, the Daughters of the American Revolution and Cameo Club. She was an avid football fan and, until recently, resided in her home in Kentwood Village. Mrs. Shirer is survived by her children: Catherine Driscoll Shirer Rafferty (Mrs. James Joseph Sr.), Susan Cornelia Shirer Burkett (Mrs. Barry Lee, Sr.), Arthur Shirer II, and Rae Driscoll Shirer Gainey (Mrs. Joseph Carson), 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. A service will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of Reconciliation, 7500 Market Street. The family requests donations be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice in lieu of flowers.
