Gifts & Memorial Donations

Martine Alice Oehling, 64, of Holly Ridge, North Carolina passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 12, 2023. Martine was born on November 18, 1958, in Manhattan, New York, to Edward R. and Patricia M. Smith.

Martine lived for many years in Maimi, Florida where she began her career in the field of clinical research. In 1993, Martine received her Registered Nursing degree from Elizabeth General Medical Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She found her passion in this field, working on clinical trails for over forty years, reaching the role of senior director.

Martine was an avid lover of adventure and traveling. She was very proud of the two times she skydive out of a plane and earned many hours toward her pilot’s license while living in New Jersey. Her career allowed her to travel to many different countries including Australia, Belgium, the UK and more. Martine loved visiting and learning about new places. She also loved music, including playing the piano and violin, and she loved listening to Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond. Most of all, Martine loved her family and friends. She always believed she was “born to be a mom” and she cherished that role deeply.

Martine was predeceased by her father Edward R. Smith and her sister Celeste Smith. Martine is survived by her daughter Alison C. Oehling, her son Jonathan C. Oehling and his wife, and her beloved grandson Charlie Oehling, her younger brother Warren R. Smith and her mother Patricia M. (Baker) Smith. Martine will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial gathering at Wilmington Funeral and Cremation Thursday, March 16, 2023 between 5 and 7 pm. (1535 S 41st St, Wilmington, NC 28403)

In lieu of flowers, Martine asked to be honored with a donation to the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare hospice center that took incredible care of her in her final days.

    Caryn Diuguid says:
Dear Alison, Jonathan, Samantha and Charlie, what a beautiful tribute to Martine. We go back to the very early 90's, my first and closest friend after moving from Boston, working together at 2 pharma companies. Martine was the kindest, most loving, toughest and bravest woman I know. We shared so much together, the ups and downs of life, the joy of our children, the love of clinical research, our Barbra Streisand concert, and our grandsons born a couple of months apart! I will so miss our talks, your millions of apologies, unwarranted, and your beautiful wreaths, and loving heart! I am so happy that I was there to celebrate with you your joy at Jon and Sam's wedding. You will be so missed, but rest now Martine, you have earned it. May your memory always be for a blessing. Love, Caryn (and the whole Diuguid family)
