Memorial Gifts & Donations

Mary Catherine Berner-Remmer, age 61, of Wilmington North Carolina – passed away October 17, 2021 in hospice care fighting courageously against the most aggressive form of lung cancer surrounded by her loving family.

Mary surpassed all of her disease prognoses, by months and even years, which should serve as a testament to her strength and love of those in her life including family, friends and loving neighbors.

Mary was born January 1960 in Jersey City, New Jersey to her mother Elizabeth Daly and father Jim Berner Sr.

Mary spent the majority of her life in Middletown, NJ with her mother and siblings (Jim Berner Jr, Michael Berner, Katherine Berner and Bryan Berner Sr.) before moving to North Carolina in 1999 with her husband Henry Remmer.

She leaves the aforementioned, as well as all of her family and friends, in a profound state of grief.

Mary earned her Nursing degree (B.S.N.) from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, specializing in Wound Care.

Mary, known as “Aunt Crazy Mary” by her 6 Nephews and Godsons, was a self-proclaimed “crazy cat lady” volunteering for rescues and animal shelters as well as fostering and adopting many kittens and cats over the course of her life.

Mary was known and renowned for her altruism, she never met anyone who did not deserve help or an ear. From volunteering in Hospice Care and animal shelters to giving her last dollar or a room in her house to someone in need, she no doubt manifested the grace of god in her relationships with others.

She was a beloved and dedicated aunt, godmother, sister and wife.

She will be always remembered, always loved and missed dearly.

A Funeral Mass and burial will be held in January 2022.

    Jim Berner says:
My sister was the most compassionate person I have ever met. Whether it was talking to you on the phone for hours or giving you what ever you needed, she was there for you, she loved helping people. Her family and friends were very important to her as well as her many cats. She became the "crazy cat lady" and was very proud when her nephews called her "Crazy Aunt Mary". She lived up to those two titles well. The worlds loss is heavens gain, I will miss you until we meet again Sis. Be at peace, know you were loved, God Bless You...
