Mary Fox Currier, age 78, of Wilmington, NC, went to be with Our Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 22nd, 2023, after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

Mary was born May 11th, 1945, in Wilmington, NC, the third child of Oscar Andrew Nelson and Lena Elizabeth Corbett.

Mary will forever be remembered for her perseverance, unconditional love, and strong faith in the Lord. She exuded Christ in everything she did and loved spending every moment around her family. She spent 43 years with the love of her life, Jim. She enjoyed spending time on the water, fishing, gardening, singing in her church choir, heirloom sewing, and baking desserts, especially her family’s favorite, an 8 layer chocolate cake. Mary served others quietly, often observing others in need, and making provisions for them in ways others did not know. Mary was a faithful member of Pine Valley Methodist Church.

In addition to her hobbies, Mary served as the Manager of the Carolinian Inn for over 20 years until her retirement. Throughout her career, she held many leadership positions including Training Director for National Best Western Hotels, Board of Directors of  Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors of the Y.W.C.A., and Board of Directors of Committee of 100. Mary also served as President of The Cape Fear Visitors and Convention Bureau and President of the North Carolina Hotel-Motel Association.

Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Oscar Nelson, and sister, Ruby Pugh.

She is survived by her husband, James W. Currier of Wilmington, NC; her daughter, Debbie Bessinger (David) of Isle of Palms, SC; her grandchildren, Caroline O’Neil of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Edward O’Neil of Charlotte, NC, Charlotte O’Neil and Margaret O’Neil of Charleston, SC, and Brice Bessinger of Isle of Palms, SC; sisters, Diane Rose (Larry) of Burgaw, NC and Jonnie Daniell (Ron) of Wilmington, NC.

We would like to thank the caregivers that took care of Mary in her home over the course of the last two years, many of whom became like family.
