Mary Martin Lloyd

Mary Martin Lloyd, known as Yaya to all those who loved her, age 80 of Wilmington passed away Saturday, August 3, 2013 at her home with her family by her side.

She was born in Durham, NC on June 12, 1933. Her parents were the late Maury Ernest Martin and Annie Lindsey Martin.

Yaya was a longtime resident of Wilmington. She retired from medical bookkeeping at a local health care facility in order to provide childcare in her home, not only to her grandchildren, but to many other children in the community. Yaya was the epitome of strength, integrity, passion, kindness, and true love. Those who knew and loved her will share an unbelievable mix of sadness for what is lost, but also a celebration for who she was and what she meant to everyone.

Mary was an active member of Wilmington Lodge #532 B.P.O. Elks, as well as the Elks Ladies Auxiliary. Mary loved to read, enjoyed working word and number puzzles of all kinds, and had written many poems for family and friends to enjoy.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert (Bob) M. Lloyd; five children, Robert (Robby) M. Lloyd, Jr. (Marsha), Susan L. Wilkerson (Carl), William C. “Bill” Lloyd (Shirley), Shirley Lloyd Craig, and Thomas (Tommy) L. Lloyd (Rich); grandchildren, Jennifer, Jared, Nikki, Kiley, Jessica, Steven, Valrie, Trey, Tracy, Tiffany, Jennifer, Lance, Scott, and Mason; and 10 great grandchildren.

The family will see friends from 5 to 6pm Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Wilmington Funeral Chapel, 1535 S. 41st St., Wilmington, NC 28403, where the memorial service will begin at 6pm.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1406 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28403, or the Wilmington Lodge #532 B.P.O. Elks Scholarship Fund, 5102 Oleander Dr., Wilmington, NC 28403.

Yaya was one of the most sweetest, caring, understanding person/yaya I knew. I could go to her with any problems I may have had or just to vent an she would truly take it all in an listen an give me some of the best advice back. I'm going to truly miss her and everything about her. Going to miss walking in yaya an papas house an shes just sitting there going to town on her crossword puzzles, going to miss her smile, her laugh, pretty much everything about her. Yaya understood me like no other and knew where I was coming from when we talked. I love u yaya!
