Memorial Gifts & Donations

On March 20th, 2015 Mary Susan Farquhar passed away at her home in Wilmington NC from Alzheimer’s disease.

Sue was born on July 30th, 1926 to the late Edna and James Cardwell of Washington, DC, the last of three children. A beloved mother, wife and sister, she embraced each role with passion, love and devotion.

She was married to her late husband Frank for over 58 years and raised her only son. They lived in Arlington, VA, Bethesda, MD, and Wilmington, NC. Sue was a homemaker, provider, creator, designer and supporter during her lifetime. She was always proud of her family, friends, and home. Sue enjoyed sharing her 26 years in Wilmington with her husband, son, brother and close family friends.

Sue enjoyed each phase of her life and her creativity was obvious in all of her endeavors and activities. She loved national politics and was never shy to provide her insight or opinion on issues. Sue was an outstanding partner for her late husband and mother for her son. She embraced a devoted passion and special attachment for both of her late West Highland Terriers.

She is survived by her son, Gerald Blake Farquhar of Wilmington, NC and her brother E Blake Cardwell of Wilmington, NC. She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews from both families in Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Illinois, New York, California, and Washington, DC.

A special thanks is in order for the two wonderful angels from Liberty Home Health Care and Hospice, Tonya Brown, her nurse, and Yvonne Young, her personal care assistant. These two ladies demonstrated outstanding devotion, kindness, gentleness and care to Sue during her final three weeks on earth.

In addition, the family wishes to give thanks to the staff at Wrightsville Beach Family Medicine who treated her medical needs for the last five years. Kim Farmer was instrumental in making Sue’s life more comfortable as the disease became more invasive.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to her honor may be given to any Alzheimer’s Disease foundation.

There will be a private memorial service for family and close friends at a later date.
