Mary Susan Varner Miller, 66, of Wilmington, died Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. She was born on July 22, 1946 in Richmond, Va., and grew up in Bethesda, Md. She attended Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria and earned a history degree from Dickinson College.
She moved to Wilmington in 1970 and worked for more than 40 years as a counselor for the North Carolina Sickle Cell Syndrome program. She loved the Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach communities and participated in various organizations and charities, such as the Cape Fear Orchid Society, Wilmington Choral Society, and Cape Fear River Watch. She loved gardening, cats, reading, cooking and wine.
She is predeceased by her parents, David Edwards and Mary Frances Rowe Varner, and is survived by her husband, Robert, and son, Emory of Norfolk, Va.
The family will hold a private gathering in her honor on Saturday, September 8. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the charity of one’s choice.
