Mason Kane Gainey 25, of Wilmington passed away Sunday August 27, 2017 in Charlotte.

A memorial service will be conducted 2:00 PM Thursday August 31, 2017 at Calvary Chapel of Wilmington, 2831 Carolina Beach Road.

Mason was born in Wilmington on July 6, 1992 the son of Marcus and Tabitha Godwin Gainey. Also surviving are Paternal grandmother Barbara Sellers of Leland, Maternal grandparents Frankie and Janice Godwin of Currie, and a sister Sonny Olivia Gainey of Wilmington. He was preceded in death by  grandfather’s AH Gainey, and EM Sellers .

    Mason was a brilliant, talented, kind and compassionate young man. His smile always brightened the room and his laughter was contagious. He loved unconditionally and was the best big cousin and nephew anyone could ask for. We were all so lucky to have him in our lives and he will be sorely missed. Words cannot express how saddened we all are by this tragic loss. Mason we love you more than you will ever know.

    Mason was my first best friend. He was always so genuine and always looked out for me growing up. I will miss my cousin Mason so much and all the good times we had. He always stuck up for me to his older guys cousins and made them include me in activities!

    Mason's laughter and fun spirit will be dearly missed. One hot Saturday afternoon we stood in line for hours at Six Flags for Mason's favorite ride., a wild slinging roller coaster. When it was our turn to get on Mason said he had to go to the bathroom...I said oh no you don't and off we went. He was such a joy...we will deeply miss him. Prayers to Tabby, Marcus, Sonny and family.

    It breaks my heart to know he passed. He was the type of man that could have nothing in his pocket and ask we if I wanted half. He never saw the collar of a man's skin but the actions of his character. He stood up for his believes and never backed down to a lost cause. I'll take lessons through life because he influenced me.     My heart breaks for the Gainey Family and friends!!! I never met Mason ...but knew that he and my son Cody Kinney were best of friends! My heart is grieving for you all. I just laid my only son Cody to rest this past June17;2017 he passed away in his sleep . I am here for you all! Again my condolences , prayers and love to you all!

    I just met dad in the office of Hoggard this week and I was touched right away. Actually my heart broke for him and the family. I learned a lesson by reading what Mason's grammy wrote. What a nice story. I will remember that. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I ask " How can You miss Jesus Mason," Looking at me so matter of fact, "Well grammy i'm not that old and I was just there with him in heaven, and i have a job to do, when i finished it I will go back to be with Jesus, But some days I just miss him," WOW, I said I pray its a long time before you go back, But because of you Mason, I will remember to miss him too." So MY sweet Sonny and family, from the words of an old soul of just 3, We all have a job to do, and then we will go back to Jesus, but it's ok, Like my wise young grand son said, Some days I just miss him, and now I will miss Mason To, but when I do, I will honor him, respect him and remember every good and wonderful thing he said and did.     Our hearts are filled with emotion since hearing about Mason. Emotions of sadness and heartbreak for all of his family and those who were considered family...close friends or acquaintances. What sticks out in my remembrance about Mason's family is how close they are...the love they have for one another. I know this has been a hard blow and I am so sorry. I have fond memories of Mason as he and our daughter, Kayla, along with a few other friends...shared some great times together in their early teens...and they loved him without a doubt. Paul and I are blessed to have spent time with the handsome, funny, and talented young man he was. We also share the emotion many have of hope in knowing that he is at rest and we will see him again. We are praying for the entire family to continue to find God's peace and the comforting touch of the Holy Spirit...today, tomorrow, and for the remainder of earthly time. Until eternity our little brother, we love you.

    I remember every time I saw Mason he was so kind and would do anything for you. I'd asked him about his newest tattoos. I missed him the last 10 years and loved it when he came to family gatherings. He had the sweetest smile. I never saw him argue with anyone in our family and everyone loved Mason. He will always be loved and missed by all.
