Memorial Gifts & Donations

Matilda “Tillie” Marchese passed away on May 17, 2023 in Wilmington, NC.

Tillie was born in Brooklyn, NY to an Italian mother and Irish father which lead to her unique sense of humor and outlook on life. She was the first in her family to attend college, and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from St. John’s University, where she met her husband Joe. After graduating, Tillie worked as an elementary school teacher. They eventually moved to Long Island to start their family.

Tillie spent the next 20 years raising their seven children. She was always actively involved in the local schools and spent many a PTA meeting crocheting afghans while giving her input on whatever issue was being discussed. She loved tending to the large garden in her backyard which kept her growing family supplied with all the tomatoes, zucchini, and eggplant they
could eat. When her children got older and she had more time to herself, she could be found zipping around the roller- skating rink. After the children were out of high school, Tillie and Joe relocated to Wilmington, NC and settled in to enjoy retired life. For Tillie, this meant trading in the PTA meetings for homeowner’s association meetings, volunteering as editor and
writer of the association monthly newsletter, and being an active member of the Wilmington NC Lions Club, taking on the role of president for several years. She was also a dedicated volunteer at the Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary in their Outreach Program.

Tillie had a heart of gold and it is impossible to express how dearly she will be missed by those she left behind.

She is survived by Joseph, her husband of 65 years, her children Philip (Sylvia) Marchese, Catherine Marchese, Theresa (Gregory) Pratt, Joseph (Donna) Marchese, Frank Marchese, Dianne Marchese, and Andrea (Scott) Paterson, 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Theresa Burke, and multiple nephews, nieces, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents, Francis and Theresa Daly, brother Frank Daly, and daughter Marie Marchese.

Visitation will be at Wilmington Funeral and Cremation, 1535 South 41st Street, Wilmington, NC, 28403 on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM.

Mass of Christian burial will take place Wednesday, May 24th at 1:00 PM at the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, 412 Ann St, Wilmington, NC 28401.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wilmington NC Lions Foundation, 1320 Honor Lane, Wilmington, NC 28412

    Ann Burgermyer & family says:
Aunt Tillie was a wonderful lady with a kind and generous heart, warm smile, great wit, and infectious laughter. I have many fond memories of my aunt and godmother, especially of her and my dad. I take comfort in knowing they are together again and with all our loved ones in heaven. My love and condolences to my Uncle Joe and the Marchese family.
