Mattie Louise Batts Garner 80, passed away on November 16, 2017.  She was born in Duplin County on January 12, 1937 to the late Ennis Gardner and Lillie Belle Cavenaugh Batts.  She is survived by her children Michael Lee Garner ( Betty ), William Tracy Garner ( Charlene ), Sherry Garner, and Geneva Elhubishi McNealy ( Justin ) ; grandchildren Courtney Garner Benjamin ( Jeramiah ), Gunnar Garner ; Great-grandchildren Samantha McNealy and Eli Benjamin ; brother Robert Batts ( Vera ).

    I worked with Louise many a day in the O.R. at NHRMC. She ALWAYS made my day easier, she was wonderful to work with, knowledgable, pleasant, a hard worker and had a good sense of humor to get us through the day. It's been 20 years ago since we worked together but she was one I have always remembered as a positive influence in a work area that was extremely demanding. My thoughts and prayers are with you family as you move into this next stage of life.

    Louise Garner has always been one of my favorite ladies at Oleander UM Church where I went. My first memory was when her husband, Billy, was at Cape Fear for cataract removal. (I was working/volunteering there at the time) I told them that I had eye surgery when I was 7 years old and had to go back for cataract removal the next year. When I left the room, little did I know the impact I made on them. They joined the church not long after that. She left an indelible mark on me and will always be remembered for her love of life, her family and God. She was a righteous, Christian woman whose love of God rooted her firmly to the ground. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, Tracy, Mike, Charlene, Geneva and Sherry and their children. Love to all of you.
