Merton VanVliet, Jr. 79, of Rocky Point, NC formerly of Bryant Pond, Maine died Friday, February 4, 2022, at his home.

Merton was born in Westbrook, ME on March 30, 1942, the son of the late Merton and Bertha Macomber VanVliet. He was a graduate of Westbrook high school class of 1960. He went on to serve his country in the US Navy, and returned home and became a professional firefighter for the City of Westbrook, Maine, retiring after 30 years of service. Preceding him in death was his wife Judith M. VanVliet.

Surviving are sons Jayson VanVliet and wife Donna of Rocky Point; Eric W. VanVliet and Tabatha of Wilmington; six grandchildren Breanna; Aimee; Jayson II; Austin; Danika; and Noah; five Great-grandchildren Gabe; Maddox; Mason; Gatlyn and Graelyn. His special K9 Moxie. Also surviving brothers Robert VanVliet and wife Nancy; David VanVliet and wife Betty; sister Patricia V. Watson and husband Paul. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

A Military funeral service will be planned for July in Westbrook, Maine
