Memorial Gifts & Donations

Michael Rollin Piner, Sr. born September 24, 1934 and passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at Liberty Commons Nursing in Wilmington.

He is preceded in death by his parents Jessie and Ottie Piner and his beloved wife of 52 years Jean Piner.

Mike was a lifelong resident of Wilmington and served in the US Army before returning to Wilmington to work for the US Army Corps of Engineers where he retired in 1992. He returned to school and graduated from UNC Wilmington. Mike taught math at Cape Fear Community College for many years. He was a member and deacon at Temple Baptist Church through which he visited nursing homes singing and sharing the Word.

Mike loved the outdoors and the water, gardening and building things. He built a boat for his wife Jean and spent many happy days “going for a ride” with her and the grandchildren, along with his dog Sam.

Most of all Mike loved his family. He was devoted to his mother and cared for her during her later years. He was never too busy for his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren dispensing advice, tutoring them in math and sharing life lessons to “make them strong”. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed being silly and playing jokes.

He is survived by his brother Dan Piner and his children Cindy Jones (Roger), Wendy Roscoe, Michael Piner, Jr (Angie), Gurney Hufham (Joy), Kenneth Hufham (Debbie), David Hufham (Kathy) and Mack Hufham (Debbie) and 20 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Liberty Commons Nursing for all the love and care they have given Mike over the years and especially after the passing of his wife Jean.

Services will be held Saturday February 17, 2024 at 11:00, with visitation beginning at 10:00 am at Wilmington Funeral Chapel.

Believe Mike and Jean are now better than I have seen them in several years, Now thinking of them way back in college days, little did I know, back then, that turns in life would one day make them part of our richly blessed family.
