Mike Russell, Sr., whose infectious smile and timid personality built a life and a livelihood envied by most, passed away peacefully at his home located in Wilmington on July 14, 2021 surrounded by the love of his life and many family members.
Mike, Sr., built Russell’s Duraclean Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning in Wilmington, N.C., from the ground up, on everything he will be remembered for – hard work, strong values, integrity and respect. Although not overly expressive, his actions of patience, kindness and strength will be remembered for years to come by all who crossed his welcoming and friendly path.
Of course he’ll be remembered for love of his North Carolina Tar Heels, his NASCAR and his absolute admiration of his son, daughter, granddaughters, and great grandchildren, but all those fall in line behind his love for his wife of 61 years.
He is survived by his rock, his wife and his best friend Lou ‘Tink’ Russell, his sister Mary Russell, son Mike Russell, Jr., and daughter Rhonda Russell Johnson and husband Alan. He will also watch from afar his granddaughter’s Brittany Mason, Lauren Reece, Katherine Russell, and Madison Johnson, as well as 5 loving great grandchildren! In addition to his loving parents Linster and Hilda Russell, Mike is preceded in death by his brother Roland Russell.
He gave his family a happy home, his friends an open door, and competitors a run for their money. And he served as a role model for each.
He’s in a better place, no doubt and leaves with us fond memories, tall tales, and proper celebrations. He may be gone, but he won’t go away. He will walk beside us every day unseen, unheard but always near.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony will held 11 am Monday, July 19, 2021 at Wilmington Funeral Chapel, led by Elder Mike Lauter. The family will see friends an hour prior to the service.
