Minnie Lou Fairbanks, age 82, of Leland passed away Sunday, March 29th, 2020 at the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare. Minnie Lou was born September 25th 1937 in Surry County, Elkin, NC to the late Conrad Gordon Atkins & Annie A. Atkins. Lou is also preceded in death by her beloved husband Douglas James Fairbanks, her brother John T. Atkins, and sister Patsy Ruth Saunders.

Lou is survived by her sister Jeanette A. Brinegar & husband Walter of Salisbury, NC. Also survived are her 4 children, oldest son, James (Jimi) E. Bennett Jr & wife Rosemary of Atlanta, GA, daughter LuAnn Bennett of Atlanta, GA, son William (Rick) Richard Bennett & wife Susanna of Southport NC, son Harry Gordon Bennett & wife Heidi. Of Leland, NC. Also survived are her 6 grandchildren, Heidi Bennett of Atlanta, GA, Keisha McClain of Southport, NC, WinterLofaro of Apex , NC, Collin & Conner Bennett of Leland, NC, Brandon Brown of Durham NC, plus 7 great grandchildren, Jaylan & Dylan McClain of Southport, NC , Avery, Mylan, & Ellis Lofaro of Apex, NC, Tycen Brown of Durham NC & Caroline Bennett of Leland , NC.

Lou was an active and dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Woodburn Leland, NC and often volunteered at Bible School which was one of the highlights of her summer. She loved traveling and visiting with her dearest friend Louise Sharp. She loved sitting outside on her swing watching the humming birds as they were feeding. She was an avid reader of many books, you hardly ever saw Lou without a book laid across her chest, as she loved to read.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date due to the Covid-19 virus mandate! All will be welcome to attend and celebrate Lou’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to North Carolina / American Cancer Society 2202 Wrightsville Ave. Suite 111 Wilmington, NC 28403.

The family would like to especially thank Harry & Heidi Bennett for their unconditional love and heart to serve in taking care of mom, along with the exceptional caregivers and staff at the Lower Cape Fear Life Care center.

    Glad that Mama Lou and MAMA Betty Gay got as close as they did in the last few years. She was always kind to us and loving. We all were family for sure. Love you Harry and Heidi. Condolences to all the family. I pray God give everyone of you peace at this time.
