Memorial Gifts & Donations

On September 3, 2012 Patricia Ann ‘Patty’ Burley Maus peacefully departed this earth to join the Lord and begin her richly deserved reward in heaven.

Patricia Ann Burley was born August 1, 1927 in Duncansville, PA, daughter of Donald J. and Ethel L. Burley. Patty attended St. Francis College, where she played varsity basketball throughout her college years, worked in the library, and was one of the first females to graduate there, earning a BA in English in 1948. During her college years, she met her future husband, best friend, and love of her life, William J. “Bill” Maus whom she married in 1950. They started a family immediately in Pittsburgh, PA, relocated to Indiana, PA, then settled in Erie, PA until retiring comfortably in North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William J. Maus, son, Thomas D. Maus, and sister, Mary Judith (Judy) Russo.

Patricia is survived by her brother, John D. Burley of Houston, TX, brother, James J. Burley of Cresson, PA, sister, Joan (Burley) Smajda of Johnstown, PA and also survived by daughters Diane Maus of Fairborn OH; Cynthia Maus Sage (Russell Sage) of Tucson AZ; Mary Pat Maus of Natick MA; and Paula Maus Cameron (Adam Cameron) of Wilmington NC; and sons David (Alice Feehley) Maus of Kennerdell PA; Daniel (Linda Beaumont) Maus of Troy OH; Donald Maus (Joseph Welsh) of Pittsburgh PA; and Timothy (Laura Boetger) Maus of Pittsburgh PA. In addition, eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren survive.

Patricia was an amazing woman. A small and diminutive figure, she selflessly bore nine children within twelve years, was a devout Catholic, and worked tirelessly each day to serve her family, her church, and her community. Nine children took a great deal of dedication and effort, yet Patty found time most days of her adult life to attend daily Mass, drawing great strength and guidance in the teachings of the church. Along-side her husband, she served as a pre-nuptial marriage counselor, delivered Meals On Wheels in Erie, and volunteered tirelessly with L’Arche (a Catholic charity in Erie, PA) for many years, all the while keeping her husband and children as her primary responsibility. She loved to play golf, tennis and bridge in her spare time with her many friends and family, and was a talented seamstress, gardener, and nature lover with a special relationship with all varieties of birds and the great outdoors. Patricia enjoyed and shared her great love of literature, theatre, music, and poetry by reading and sharing the beauty with her family continually.

Mrs. Maus will be cremated, and a Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mark Catholic Church, 1011 Eastwood Road, Wilmington, NC 28403 on Friday, September 7 at 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Cornelia Nixon Davis, Inc.-Legacy Fund 1011 Porters Neck Road, Wilmington, NC 28411 or Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington NC 28401.
