Memorial Gifts & Donations

Patrick Shawn Hudson of Wilmington, Age 52,  passed away peacefully at Cypress Pointe Rehab & Health Care Center after spending a great morning visiting with family and friends.

He was born in Wilmington, NC and attended John T. Hoggard High, UNC-Wilmington as well as Ball State University in Muncie, IN. He served his country with honor and distinction in the US Army Band.

After college, he worked many years in the hardware industry including Hudson Hardware and Stewart’s Hardware in Southport, NC. At the time of his declining health, he was employed with the Wilmington Cape Fear Pilots Association as a Maritime Navigation Dispatcher.

His passions in life were playing his saxophone as well as playing cribbage, from games around the kitchen table to serious tournaments in Reno, NV. His love of music allowed him to play numerous gigs with very talented musicians, leading to lifetime friendships. Shawn was always happiest with his sax in his hands.

Shawn was preceded in death by his father Arthur Hudson, mother Margaret “Dee” Hopseker and step-father Elwood “Hoppy” Hopseker. He is survived by his brother Jay Hudson (Betty), aunt Cindy Everett Meyers (Greg), nieces Jennifer Goodman and Ashley Mears, great niece and nephew Jayla and Alex Hudson and a special canine friend, Sophie, whose visits made his day extra special.

During Shawn’s illness he faced adversity with courage, strength and yes, even humor. His family and friends would like to thank the many great caregivers including the staff of Cypress Pointe, Devita Dialysis Center, Dr. Matt Janik and Charles Neuwirth and staff, especially Tara.

Shawn had many friends who stayed in touch and lifted his spirits during his illness. Please know he loved and appreciated all of you.

I have fond memories of Shawn when we were classmates at UNCW in the Music Department. He was a kind soul, had a heart of gold and what talent! RIP my friend!

Shawn was a student in my 8th grade science class at Lake Fotest Jr High. His mother, Dee, became my dear friend and mentor. We remained friends through the years and had a great time last week end remembering fun times. Shawn got my son David and I excited about musicals when he played in the orchestra for "Singing in the Rain" at Thalian Hall. Dee and I enjoyed going to hear Shawn play at Myrtle Beach, the Hilton, and UNCW. He was so talented and fun to be around. I am so glad to have had the opportunity to spend time with him and his family.

Scoop and I played many gigs together over the years. Sound Seduction with Larry Price and Danny Pera. We also did a lot of hanging out, and he was always a funny, positive and incredibly sweet guy. What a gift he was to us all.
