PEGGY STROUPE POWELL, 63, left us in body but certainly not in spirit, on March 19, 2018, after a lengthy, brave, and fearless battle with leukemia. She fought with a smile, grace, and a warrior spirit.

Peggy was born in Wilmington, NC on August 20, 1954 to Howard Stroupe Sr. and Eleanor Hand Stroupe. She spent her youth enjoying Wrightsville Beach, YMCA dances, and The Miljo with her lifelong friends. After graduating from New Hanover High School in 1972, a few months later on her 18th birthday she married her one true love, Billy Powell, beginning a beautiful adventure that was anything but typical.

Peggy never met a stranger. If you knew her, you saw the famous smile and the green eyes that would illuminate every room. She never let anyone, strangers included, go without food, a soothing kind word, or a laugh. She had a huge heart, and a soft spot for children that was unparalleled. Her sense of humor was legendary! You didn’t often spend time with her without a laugh or a grin. Her soul was elegant and priceless, and she affected so many lives and lent so much joy. Never has a lady brought so much light and comfort unto others or possessed a heart so large and pure. She was extraordinary. She was an Angel on Earth.

In 1978, Peggy and Billy moved to “The Compound” in Ogden and raised their 3 children, and others, creating a brilliant life filled with endearing humor, heartfelt compassion, self-sacrifice, and a love that was, is, and will always be unmatched. Family first. She was kind of a Big Deal! She was also a sincere inspiration to all those whose lives she ever touched.

She was an avid fisherman and adored the water. Every flounder and spot in the Atlantic feared her. She also loved the mountains, playing cards with her family, auctions, festivals, singing extra loudly, and attending events with her car club family, The Sun Coast Cruisers. She was loyal and dedicated, and has worked for Dr. and Mona Black since 1970.

She was preceded in death by her parents (Howard and Eleanor), two brothers (Lance and Gene), and a sister (Patricia). She is survived by her soulmate husband of 46 years (Billy), 3 doting children (Billy III, Shannon, and Ashley), 5 adored grandchildren (Garrett, Jazmine, Cheyenne, Fisher, and Dylan), her beloved brother (Ricky), and devoted sister (Nancy).

A Memorial to celebrate her amazing life will be held at “The Compound” (120 Sweetwater Dr, Wilmington, NC 28411on Saturday, April 7th, at 1:00. We will share fun stories in the garage and under a massive circus tent, eat, drink, and celebrate all that she was in her sweet wonder and glory! And she was plenty!

The family appreciates all the thoughts, prayers, support, and love shown to her and us throughout this courageous fight. TEAM PEGGY!

My friend, my heart hurts for everyone who had the privilege of knowing and loving you. Your smile and warmth could light up the room. Your hilarious jokes could bring people to tears. The love of your Husband, Childfen and Grandbabies was so beautiful to see. You fought like a warrior, now it’s time for you to rest. No more pain be the angel in heaven to us like you were here on earth. Rest easy my friend and fly with the angels.
