Memorial Gifts & Donations

Philip Henry Morgan Jr, age 87, of Wilmington, North Carolina passed away November 13, 2023. Philip was a US Airforce veteran, serving our country from October 2, 1956 to January 8, 1960.

At a very young age Philip was gifted in creating poetic images and capturing the world through photography. He began his career with the Wilmington Star News in 1956, finding advertisements for the paper. However, his real interest was in photography, after talking to an Airforce recruiter about photography in the military, it was not long before Philip was flying to Madrid, Spain as an active-duty service member. After being honorably discharged from the United States Airforce he returned home, he then took a job at WECT TV becoming the chief photographer. Later Philip would move to Wilmington, Delaware taking a position at the News Journal. Philip later moved back to North Carolina, he worked for WSOC-TV in Charlotte, and the Charlotte Observer. As an Associated freelancer, Philip captured many historical moments through photography in the eastern United States, including the arrival of the USS North Carolina to Wilmington, her final homeport in 1961 and the March on Washington in 1966. Philip completed his career as a videographer and public relations representative for Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation in Brunswick County, North Carolina in the 1990’s. Philips other true love was sailing, and of course how could he not with a name like Captain Morgan.
After retirement Philip would sail the Caribbean on a schooner, which he nicknamed “My Lady”. Crossing the troubled seas, Philip longed for adventure. He lived his life and what a full life he had, finally at peace, smile Captain Morgan and carry on…..

Philip is survived in death by his three daughters, Roxanne Vivlamore of Burgaw, NC, Sheila Morgan of Wilmington, NC, and Philia Morgan of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, three grandchildren Terra Jenrette, Philip Hall, and Morgan Canady, four great grandchildren and a very special lifelong friend and companion Joann Alford. Philip is preceded in death by his parents Philip Henry Morgan Sr and Netta Marie Cash Morgan. Services will be held privately per the family’s request; date is yet to be determined.

Services are entrusted to Wilmington Funeral and Cremation. Please leave condolences for the family on his Tribute Wall
