Richard C. Hughes, 72, of Sneads Ferry, NC, went to be with Lord on March 1, 2019, after a long illness. He was the son of Clarence and Josephine Cecil Hughes.

He attended East Bank High School before joining the United States Marine Corps. He served two tours of duty in Viet Nam, earning a number of decorations including the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Purple Heart.

After leaving the marine corps, he was employed by Bethlehem Steel Mines Division at Kayford, WV.

Richard was member of Faith Harbor United Methodist Christ Church in Surf City, NC. He was also an active member of Sun Coast Cruisers Classic Car Club in Wilmington, NC. He loved all things cars!

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Joyce Ann Hanshaw and Wilma Jean Jenkins; a brother, Michael Wayne Hughes, and his parents.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janet Davis Hughes, his son Richard “Rick” (Donna) Hughes and his daughter, Jo Ellen Hughes White. He leaves three grandchildren, Logan White of Jacksonville, NC; Shannon Hughes of Dunbar, WV, and Zachary White of Sneads Ferry, NC. He also leaves one great granddaughter, Emberlee Lynn Reese of Dunbar, WV.

He leaves his brothers: Howard Estep of SC, Herman (Linda Kay) Hughes, Danny (Lisa) Hughes and Paul (Lynn) Hughes of WV and his sister, Mary (Hughes) (Roy) Gayton of Ravenswood, WV. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Sue Davis (Jerry) Thomas of WV, his aunt Roberta Hughes of East Bank, WV and many beloved niece, nephews and cousins, as well as many dear friends.

Funeral services at Faith Harbor UMC, Surf City, NC on March 9 at 1:00 PM, with Rev. David Brownlee and Pastor Neal McHenry officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the church building fund are graciously accepted.
