Richard John Matthews, 28, of Wilmington died in the line of duty with the Wilmington Police Department on Wednesday, February 18, 2009.

Rich was born in New Jersey on June 10, 1980, the son of Dennis and Margaret Schwartz Matthews.
A 2003 graduate of York College, he majored in criminal justice and then became a police officer with the New York City Police Department prior to coming to Wilmington.

In addition to his parents, other survivors include his wife, Allison O’Day of Wilmington, and his brother, Christopher Matthews and his sister, Patricia Matthews, both of Bethlehem, PA.

A public visitation will be held Sunday, February 22, 2009 at Port City Community Church, 250 Vision Drive, Wilmington from 5:00 pm to 8:00 p.m.

A funeral mass will be held Monday, February 23, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mark Catholic Church, 1013 Eastwood Rd., Wilmington, with Father Dan Oschwald officiating.

Wilmington Police Department Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers.
Interment will follow at a later date in Pennsylvania.
