Richard Kent Luther, age 66 of Wilmington passed away on Sunday, July 7th, 2019 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Patricia Austin Luther.

He was born on January 17th, 1953 to Harris Scarborough Luther, Jr. and Elizabeth Thrower Luther.

He attended New Hanover High School, and retired from General Electric after a 38-year career. Like his wife Pat and son Evan, Richard worked in law enforcement as a special deputy sheriff with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. Richard was a football official with the NCHSAA for 28 years, and was a score table official for over 20 years at UNCW basketball games. Richard was a member of Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church in Wilmington, NC.

He is survived by his three sons, Paul Leon Pfeifer and wife Tracy, Christopher Scott Luther and wife Shanna, and Evan Kent Luther; three grandchildren, Benjamin Wesley Pfeifer, Morgan Elizabeth Luther, and Austin Thomas Luther; his sister, Robin Harts and husband Greg, brother Harris S. Luther, III and wife Nubang; and granddog 1st Sgt. Stan.

The memorial service will be held at 11am Monday, July 15, 2019, at Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church in Wilmington, NC.

In lieu of flowers, Richard requested that memorial contributions be made to Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church.

    I was so shocked and saddened. Richard was a great man that we knew for many years! I enjoyed playing golf with Richard and I'm so thankful that his son, Evan, and I were able to play golf recently together. Teresa and I loved his sense of humor and enjoyed being his Facebook friend. May God Bless his family with the peace knowing that he and Pat are together again in heaven.     My deepest condolences. Richard was a great guy who lived a wonderful life. I worked with him for nearly a decade on the UNCW Basketball press table. I remember when I was dating the woman who would become my wife, Kimmie, he would always ask "When are you gonna marry that girl?" It's a sweet memory I won't forget.
